I am new to this forum and new to Mini Excavators. I have 0 experance with mini excavators. I have a 150+ acre Pc of property and looking to purchase a used Mini excavator for just personal use on my land which I narrowed down to I think a 5 ton size with rubber tracks with a enclosed cab. With heat and A/c and thumb. I'm starting to look around for a 6 ton (ish) mini/mid size excavator. There seems to be a lot of 5 and 5.5 ton machine from the different manufacturers, however, once you get to the 6 to 6.5 ton mark, the choices seem to be pretty limited. I currently run a JD50C, which has been a pretty good machine. It's a bit slow, but very reliable. I think Bobcat has the nicest mini's too. But they have great service and loaners to try out. And, Go where your local support is the strongest. The dealer service after the sale is what's most important in any heavy equipment purchase. I have two kubota Kx 121 with cabs, and I love them. But still like the Bobcats better. I have a Cat 416C tlb, and a mini/skid steer combination. If I had to choose one or the other I think I would go for the tlb. My mini/skid combo is made up of a 12,000# Bobcat 435ZHS and an8,000# A300 (all wheel steer AND skid steer depending on switch position). They are versatile but they will take longer to do most jobs than the tlb.

After 7 derailments in the first 70 hours on a new machine with the ASV, I was always cautious if on a side slope. While the anti-derailment kit solved most of the problems, I still saw excessively fast track component wear and occasional derailment issues when in less than perfect conditions.

I have operated and probably have the most mini-Ex experience with Bobcat E42s, and Kubota U-48s and didn't feel a big draw toward one or the other. The Bobcats felt a bit more powerful and the Kubota's had slightly snappier hydraulic function. I am looking at a New Bobcat E48 Platinum and a Kubota KX040 or U series.
