Before i had the excavator brain fart, i was going to build a regular splitter with an assortment of adjustable wedges,4,6,and 8 ways. Now im thinkin that a single wedge on an excavator will be about as fast. You wont be losing any time going and rolling a nother round to the splitter. You can set in one spot and bust away, all by a thumb switch. Hey, Just wondering. I have a HD auger that I can run on either my 3.5 ton or my 6 ton machine. Just curious if one could use the auger power head to double up as a cone style log/stump splitter.

Hey, I was wondering if any of you'll had experience with a split fire 4409. I just got one and I am in need of the couple/ attachment plate so I can connect the splitter to my excavator. I bought it with just a flat plate on the splitter, so I can buy the excavator plate and weld it . The wood was up to 10' long. My folks spent fall and early winter cutting down trees, cutting to length for the firebox for the barn and splitting the trees. Once split it was loaded on a wagon and brought to each barn and placed in a wood shock which is wood standing up in a circle. Some shocks would be 40' across or maybe more. Two-stage pumps were designed specifically for log splitters as they are the most cost efficient. When a single stage gear pump is used the engine required to power it can cost as much as a complete splitter with a 2-stage pump. I have only seen one splitter manufacturer that uses a single stage gear pump with a small engine.
I run a 4"x24" cylinder on one splitter and a 6"x60" cylinder on the other one. With the wood cut into blocks I split about a cord and a half an hour with either one. I feed to 6x60 with my mini ex to split stuff 8-30" in diameter and 48-60" long for my wood stove. Good Luck John Hi Ronsii, my excavator has a 15.4 gpm flow which is similar to the high volume side of most log splitters so cycle time is great. The whole splitter was already premade setup, I think its an american splitter, and I think its a 5" cylinder but I can measure and confirm. The big log I have no idea why it stalled, seemed knotty.
